What Does a Vehicle's Hydraulic System Do and Why Is Maintenance so Important?

Posted on

Most motorists understand how complicated a modern-day automobile can be and realise that a trained mechanic needs to conduct maintenance and repairs from time to time. They may understand that the vehicle's engine and transmission rely on constant lubrication, but may not be aware of a separate and equally crucial system that relies on hydraulic pressure. If you've been told that you need to have a hydraulic service but don't understand what this means, what do you need to be aware of?

Hydraulic Assistance

As a conventional family car can weigh more than a ton, it stands to reason that it will need a considerable force to slow it down, when it is in motion. This is why these vehicles are equipped with a hydraulic braking system, that amplifies the pressure a driver exerts when depressing the pedal. However, in some vehicles a hydraulic system can also control other components and may, for example, help to adjust the height of the suspension. Either way, it's crucial to ensure that this system is always in good repair.

As Time Passes

Specialised fluid is used and it's important to keep this liquid in good condition and isolated within the system. This is because if it is exposed to the outside air it can absorb moisture through hygroscopy, which would reduce its efficiency. Over time, components of the system can begin to break down, especially rubber hoses and connectors. Also, miniature particles can break free from the piping system and this can compromise the efficiency of the fluid. After all, metal lines will begin to rust over the years and rubber hoses, even though they are strengthened and braided, will naturally perish.

Something Is Not Right

If you feel that the brake pedal on your car is "spongy" or simply doesn't feel as efficient as it used to be, this could be a sign that the brake fluid has seen its better days and needs to be replaced. It could also be a sign of faulty valves, a failing pump, or brake pads that also need to be renewed.

Taking Action

It's very important to ensure that the hydraulic system in any vehicle is working at full efficiency and sometimes, there may be more than one separate circuit, especially if the car has a hydraulically operated suspension system. It's therefore crucial to act promptly if you have a hydraulic service scheduled, or if you feel that the system is not as efficient as it should be.
