5 Tips for Keeping an Accurate Logbook for Your Vehicle

Posted on

Ideally, you should use your car's logbook to track when you need servicing and to make notes about servicing. In addition to keeping your own records organized, a detailed logbook can make it easier to sell your vehicle. Keep these tips in mind.

1. Always Get Routine Maintenance on Time

It's easy to ignore routine car maintenance. If nothing is wrong with your vehicle, you may think that you don't need to take it in for a repair. However, you should err on the side of caution and get your car serviced as recommended by the manufacturer.

Generally, that includes replacing filters, flushing out fluids and similar tasks. For the most part this steps are preventative. They help you avoid serious repair issues.

2. Put Updates in Your Digital Calendar

While logbooks are useful, they are generally paper books that you store in your car. As a result, you may forget about them. To help you remember the advice in your logbook, you may want to make notes in your digital calendar.

For instance, if you get the transmission fluid changed, you may want to ask the mechanic when you need to return. Then, note that date in your logbook and set a reminder on your digital calendar. If the reminder is based on driving time rather than calendar time, set a reminder to check the speedometer on your car. If it's time for log book servicing, schedule an appointment. If you need to drive a few more kilometres, set another reminder so you remember to check again.

3. Have Mechanics Stamp Your Logbook

Many logbooks have spots where mechanics can stamp the book. Note that you don't have to go to the dealership. You can have any qualified mechanic stamp your book. That creates a record of service, which is helpful for you personally and for anyone who buys your car in the future.

4. Keep Receipts

In addition to keeping records in your logbook, you may want to keep receipts to back up the information in the log book. Keep the receipts in a paper folder, or scan them and keep them in a digital folder. Note on each receipt where the corresponding record is in the logbook.

5. Check Your Warranty

In many cases, car warranties only stay valid if you get your vehicle serviced as recommended. Check your warranty and make sure that you keep the appropriate records. That can be essential if you ever need to make a claim.
